We recycle all our dead batteries and any electronic thing we get rid of (cell phone, old VCR, broken remote etc.). I don't know about SB, but San Francisco has recycling centers for those sorts of things. Sometimes you have to pay $5 for them to recycle it, but totally worth it to reduce waste!

Jade,
What great efforts you are taking!! I am the same way- trying to change to better myself & the planet, but not wanting to be preachy about being more green;)

Another small step you can take- use old t-shirts or towels as cleaning rags instead of using up paper towels. Then you can wash these and re-use them over and over again. Same with napkins...instead of using paper napkins or paper towels at dinner buy a set of re-useable cloth napkins (they've got some pretty ones at Anthropologie!!!) that can be washed, over and over again. If you need to buy paper towels, buy the recycled kind from Trader Joe's or 7th Generation.

Another big energy user-waster that most people do not realize- unplug your cell phone charger if your not charging your cell phone. Leaving the charger plugged into the wall all the time still uses energy apparently!! Or so SDG&E told me!

I used to use a ton of water bottles, mainly because I drink water all day long. I bought a Camelbak BPA-free waterbottle at REI (they are about $15) and now just drink out of that all day. So that could solve your metal water problem. This thing is always with me, it's basically my sippy cup.
