you capture – play

Approximately 20 years ago, “play” meant pulling out a large box to our living room couch and spending about one and a half hours setting up an entire house, complete with rooms, bedspreads, little dishes and cups, dressing Barbie up nicely and having her hold long and intense conversations with her beau of choice, Ken. They bickered a lot, those two, especially because Ken put on a nice face but with such a stiff upper lip, he really wasn’t up to communicating very well. Meanwhile he thought Barbie was a bit self-centered. (And frankly he had a point: she did have her name all plastered about on every plausible surface, after all.) But occasionally, Barbie would ride off on her horse in a nice huff, try on a few more outfits, get her hair braided, and then come back later having forgotten what all they argued about. They also spent a lot of time kissing, so all in all, I supposed everyone was pleased with the arrangement.

After several hours of their shenanigans, everything was put back away in the box in time to set the table for dinner.

Flash forward 20 years, play time now involves toys that are made not of plastic, but rather metal and light. And instead of names like Ken and Barbie, they have names like Nikon and “Despicable Me”.

There is still a box, of sorts.

Other people bring their boxes too:
And line them up neatly, ready for play time.

Out of the box comes friends

And dinner

And even a man to kiss.
His name is Toby though, not Ken. I’m pretty sure if you called him Ken, he’d look at you crossways.

His clothes are cooler than Ken’s anyway. (Although Ken has been known to rock the Donnie Darko.)

And once all is nicely assembled, it’s PLAY TIME.

Drive-ins are fun. I’m glad they brought them back.

How do you play?

The photo of my friends in the back of their car was actually taken by Toby (though I did the post processing, so you might call it a joint effort). The final photo is a 10-second exposure using a Nikon D300.

  1. how cool is that! I love drive ins! And I love the picture of the people in the trunk, too fun. Great job capturing feeling in your pictures. :)

  2. Drive-ins are fun. We recently took our boys to one and had a blast. I love the “Out of the box comes friends” picture.

  3. We had a drive in near our house growing up and I can’t count the number of Friday or Saturday nights our family spent loading up the station wagon and watching 2 or 3 movies over the course of the evening. They re-made one a little farther away, but it is still a great night of entertainment!

  4. Great photos, I love how you took the theme of child’s play and changed it to suit your drive-in movie. I’ve always wanted to go to one of those, they seem so very American! I don’t think the weather is up for that here, although we get the occasional play or concert.

  5. I wish there was a drive in around here. And that it wasn’t to hot to do that kind of thing here right now.

Fun post & pics!- looks like a great time!! :)

  6. hooray for the drive-in! i want to go to one. except not here (in vegas) where it is hot, hot, hot even in the dark, dark, dark.

  7. Love it. I used to love the drive in when I was little, but I haven’t been in years. (Even though every year I say we should go.)

PS – Um, the Om on the car? If I were to need one of those, where might I find it? =^)

  8. I’m not entirely sure where I got it (it’s been a couple of years), but I think it was this place:

I’d never been to a drive-in before. They all gone defunct by the time I was old enough to go. But this one just got bought up and renovated. I was amazed! Two brand spanking new feature films for just $6.75 a person. Crazy considering we now pay $9.75 a person for just one film at the theater.
