I’ve been eating a lot of these lately.
I feel like there was so much I wanted to tell you, and now – since I didn’t jot it down – I can’t remember any of it. Did you have a Superbowl Party? I’m always interested to hear what people ate at their Superbowl parties. Did you make up a huge feast? Tons of chips & dip?
The Superbowl started, for us, at 6 a.m., so I served up scrambled eggs and hash browns while we watched the Niners tease us with that oh-so-hopeful sprinting attempt to catch up. Being in Asia, I missed out on all those commercials and watched the ones everyone was talking about later on You Tube. I did have a favorite ad they aired here though. It was right during the power outage and the ad ended with a black screen and the tagline, “Sight. It cannot be replaced.” Ha! I love the irony.

Winston, the pudgy elephant my husband brought back for me from his motorbike trip to Laos.
Oh! But the most exciting news was that Les Miserables finally opened in Thailand! Unfortunately, this weekend we had the annual Flower Festival in town, complete with flower markets and parade, etc., which meant that from Thursday night to Sunday, we suffered the worst traffic ever. So when Toby and I decided to head out from our lunch for an impromptu movie date and we thought that an hour was more than enough time to get from said lunch to said movie (normally a 15-minute drive)…we were sorely mistaken. And we had come on separate vehicles (him on my scooter and me in the car because we had run errands separately that morning), so when we got out of the movie and finished dinner and tried to head home….we found that it had started DUMPING rain and Toby had to ride the whole way home, soaking wet.
But the movie! Was awesome. I’ve never seen Les Mis on stage, but I did read the book. While I connected with the characters a little better in the book, I felt the movie had done a much better job of presenting the social & historical setting and had drawn much clearer connections between the characters and their milieu. I was pleasantly surprised by both Hugh Jackman’s and Anne Hathaway’s performances. Also I pretty much cried my way through the June Uprising, especially during “Empty Chairs and Empty Tables” and the part where Jean Valjean said that Cosette was never his to keep. {sob} I really enjoyed watching the movie – and I think it also improved the more I thought about it afterward too. I spent all of Sunday hunting down the music so I could belt out at the top of my lungs: “Do you hear the people sing?/Singing the song of angry men” I’m sure Dot thought Mama had clear lost it.
And Toby, my lovely husband, who HATES musicals so much it gives him energy, who SLEPT through Les Mis on BROADWAY, said he enjoyed the film as well.
And Lincoln is finally being released in Thailand this week so I have a whole new awesome film to look forward to.
I want to say that my life right now is more exciting than the movies I’m watching…but alas, that’s all I have to share this week. My energy is low these days, so I spend a lot of time hibernating at home, where the most exciting thing I did was make homemade chili and Southern cornbread – with the cornbread flour I hauled with me all the way from South Carolina, even past TSA who was convinced I was sneaking cocaine in betwixt the cornmeal. Sure was worth it. I love me some home baked cornbread. I made extra so we could have leftovers because chili, like stew and curry, is always better the next day.

Lovely photos.
Lots of excitement in your neck of the woods! So funny that the game starts at 6am for you! We had simple chips, dips and then make your own sm'ores!
I’ve seen Les Mis’ and loved it too. Can’t wait to own the video
. And like you – Lincoln is high on my list of ‘not-to-be-missed’ films atm! I’m no film buff, but there’s some good ones about right now – historical stuff grips me
I want to see both of these movies – even more now. I found the commercials for the Super Bowl to be lacking and the half-time to be more about booty and less about music/sound quality. But the game was engaging, even though my player, Randy Moss, has yet to get that Ring. Oh well!
Thanks for sharing.
I love your enthusiasm for Les Mis! I enjoyed every minute too, and have the music playing nonstop in my car. You will appreciate Lincoln — it's a literary film with poetic dialogue and fantastic acting. Thank you for hosting this party!
It really is the husband-friendly Les Mis!
Yes it is! I was totally thinking of you guys when we watched it.
I had the healthiest Super Bowl ever – apple crumble, stuffed mushrooms and veggie nachos – all organic vegetables too!
